SO, WHAT IS HELP TO BUY?
Put simply it’s a chance for first-time buyers to gain a foothold on the property ladder with as little as a 5 per cent deposit.
On selected new build properties (up to £600,000), the government will lend buyers in London up to 40 per cent of the purchase price as a low-interest equity loan and up to 20% outside of London.
There are, of course some conditions, such as not being able to rent out the property. But using Help to Buy will give many house-hunters the opportunity to settle close to central London or within an easy commute.
SO, WHAT IS THE NO STAMP DUTY SCHEME ?:
For the moment, First-time buyers will no longer pay Stamp Duty on properties worth up to £300,000.
For properties between £300,000 and £500,000 no Stamp Duty will be payable on the first £300,000.
For example, if a property is worth £450,000, you will pay no Stamp Duty on the first £300,000 and 5% on the remaining £150,000.
Under the old system, first-time buyers would have paid £12,500 in Stamp Duty but now just £7,500.
